1. A Brief Introduction:


Philosophy of science and technology (Natural Dialectics) is a burgeoning borderline discipline which explores the interaction among science, technology and human sciences such as philosophy. It is focused on the constitutive elements and mechanism of reciprocal action of scientific and technological systems, as well as the general rules of the genesis, development and application of science and technology. Currently, the mainstream research domains of philosophy of sciences and technology includes the theory of nature, theory of science and technology, the methodology of science and technology, the systematic study of science, technology and society, etc. The content of philosophy of science and technology covers human sciences, natural sciences and technology. It is an interesting interdisciplinary major, which have attracted many researchers from different backgrounds, to do extensive study on science and technology from the perspectives of philosophy, sociology, economics and management. 


The major of philosophy of science and technology at Tianjin University highlighted its characteristics as a discipline of human sciences in an institution which is strong in technological study. In  other words, except putting a great deal of emphasis on the basic philosophical research of science and technology, it is also concerned with its application and practicability. Since the 1970s, the program has initiated various kinds of fundamental and innovative research in Natural Dialectics and Scientology, and published some of the earliest and most influential papers and manuscripts in academic circles on the subject. Since the 1980s, in order to develop a true fit with the new orientation of the Reform and Open policy, many profound and long-range research projects have been undertaken in scientific innovation, scientific management, scientific development strategy and policy. This includes the systematic study of sciences and society (especially about science and productivity, scientific innovation and development strategy for enterprises, scientific progress and economic growth, scientific innovation and education reform, scientific innovation and environmental problems), etc. 


The major of philosophy of science and technology is one of the most popular and prestigious disciplines of human sciences in Tianjin University. There are eight experts in the faculty, three of them are professors and the other five are associate professors. Six of them have Ph.D. degrees. In the recent five years, they have published more than one hundred papers in CSSCI and five monographs, two of which won the provincial award. The department has also gotten involved in more than twenty national and provincial research programs, and made remarkable contributions to Tianjin as well as the Nation.


 The major of philosophy of science and technology launched its MA program during  the 1980s. It is one of the earliest MA programs of human sciences in Tianjin University and takes two years to complete. The goal of this program is aimed at cultivating the graduates into someone who has a firm and correct political orientation, patriotism, ambitious ideals and devotedness to work, and has integrated development in virtues, intelligence, health and beauty. The graduates might be sophisticated in philosophy, be familiar with the mutual influences between science and society, and be very clear about the fundamental principles of scientific innovation. In addition, they should be able to fulfill the teach, research and manage work in scientific management, scientific development strategy and policy, scientific communication and other domains.


 2. Main Curriculum:


Scientology and technical management, technical innovation and human resource management, scientific development strategy and policy, sociology of science, theory of science and technology, history of western philosophy, readings in Classics of philosophy of science, philosophy of science, history of science, systematic analysis, etc.


3. Prospective Jobs for Graduates:


Civil servants in the administrations, large and medium-size enterprises, scientific intermediate body, financial insurance agency, news and press units, universities and research institutions, etc.


 In recent years, many of the graduates from the major of philosophy of science and technology at Tianjin University serve in the administrative positions, such as the State Taxation Administration, the news and press units, CCTV, and other large enterprises, such as Huawei Technology limited, and financial insurance agencies, such as PAIC, and academic institutions such Tianjin University.
